Importing From Overseas
Importing an item to Australia for personal use is easier than most people think. We are of course referring to a personal import, rather than a commercial shipment for retail or business. Research online reveals a lot of complicated government regulations relating to importing permits and quarantine, which can put a lot of people off the idea. But with the right company, who can explain the personal import process and take care of the paperwork, personal importing to Australia is easy and affordable. We’re here to help you understand the process and your options for organising a personal import.
What Can I Import To Australia?
We live in a world of international brands that are readily available online and in retail shops locally. But there are larger specialist items, like classic and vintage cars, bikes and trikes, caravans, and large pieces of furniture, sculpture, art and memorabilia that are unique and have a specialist following within Australia. The reality is that it’s surprisingly easy and affordable to import a huge range of personal items to Australia. And recent changes to car import laws, for example, have made options for importing classic cars even easier (more on that a bit later).
Finding A Personal Import Company
A lot of people are concerned about the amount of paperwork they will need to complete in order to import a large item, like a car, motorbike or truck to Australia. There are also plenty of horror stories of people loosing money and being ripped off by scams.
Personal import companies provide a service to assist customers to import a range of items to Australia. A personal import company will take care of all the paperwork in both countries and they understand the specific government regulations for importing different items into Australia. With a personal import company you don’t have to worry about what paperwork to do. You don’t have to be across the intricacies of importing regulations.
Import A Car Or Bike From USA To Australia
One of the most popular personal imports to Australia are classic and specialist cars, particularly American muscle car imports. But finding a 1960s Ford Mustang or a classic Harley Davidson in the right model and colour in Australia can be difficult.
The great news for American car enthusiasts is that rather than having to choose from a small number of American cars in Australia, you can use the services of a personal import company to help you find, purchase and import the exact 1964 Ford Mustang you want, safely and securely.

Recent Changes To Car Import Laws
The Australian government recently introduced changes to import laws to make it much easier for car enthusiasts to import classic or collectible specialist vehicles to Australia. This means it will be easier to import classic cars to Australia that are non-standard from 2018.
Current laws only allow cars built prior to January 1, 1989 to be imported into Australia under concessional arrangements. From 2018, specialist cars can be as young as 25 years old to be eligible for these arrangements.
There will also be additional changes that will allow new cars and motorcycles that are no more than 12 months old to be imported directly from another country.
